THE shopfloor-to-boardroom boss who started as an apprentice and ended up owning the company has come out in favour of full fiscal autonomy for Scotland.

Although Clyde Blowers chief Jim McColl stresses that he is talking about fiscal rather than political independence, his intervention will delight Alex Salmond and is the second endorsement by a major entrepreneur following that of Kwik-Fit founder Tom Farmer last week.

Mr McColl, who started out as an apprentice at Weir Pumps and returned to buy out the firm with the Clyde Blowers company he founded, called on the next Westminster Government to consider granting Scotland full control over raising and spending its own resources.

Of particular delight for the First Minister will be Mr McColl's assessment that the Calman proposals do not go far enough.

He cites a recent study by Professor Andrew Hughes-Hallet and Professor Drew Scott that argued that Calman was unworkable and instead there had to be a full Scottish Treasury.

Writing in The Herald, Mr McColl said that with finances tight across Europe, he was convinced that Scotland had to control its own revenue and spending if the country was to achieve significant economic growth.

He says: "Regardless of who wins the election on Thursday, it is quite clear that serious action will be required to address the UK fiscal deficit.

"It is now time for Scotland to take responsibility for its own economic recovery. Scotland's economy is sufficiently different from other parts of the UK to require different fiscal policies.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Conservative Party has unveiled its latest business backer: Tom Allison, chairman of Clydeport owner Peel Ports and a director of Celtic FC.

He warned about the dangers NBA jerseys of a hung parliament and said: "If we are to have the best possible chance of rebuilding our country's economic fortunes, we must have strong leadership combined with clear, decisive policies to reduce our national debt, encourage enterprise and deliver growth."
