A business tycoon is looking at buying parts of the Derrys group which has gone into administration.

Range owner Chris Dawson, said he was interested in acquiring some of Vergo Retail Ltd's stores.

Vergo, which owned Derrys department store in Plymouth, went into administration two weeks ago, blaming the economic downturn. "I cannot tell you what we have bid for but I am interested in a few of the stores, parts of the group and all of the stock," said the Plymouth-based entrepreneur who is now worth Pounds 65million according to the most recent Sunday Times Rich List.

Vergo, a department store business based in Liverpool and founded in 2007, owns and runs 20 shops, including nine department stores that it considers to be "regionally significant".

The businessman said he could not reveal exactly which parts he'd bid for but added: "Let's say I'm interested in a reasonable amount of the estate."
